Recently, according to the list of unqualified imported wines in Feb. 2017 issued by General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, three batches of imported wines (totally 10.543 tons) were destroyed or withdrawn for the disqualification while being checked out by Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. The disqualification is caused by exceeded iron. Thereinto, two batches are from France and one batch from Chile.
Reportedly, high content of iron in the wine can not only influence the taste but also make the wine generate precipitate as well as accelerate the process of oxidation & decay. Iron is the essential microelement for human beings, but excessive iron or iron overdose could lead to iron poisoning, which is harmful to heart, liver & pancreas and even influence humans’ health.
There are two major reasons leading to exceeded iron in wine. One is the penetration of raw materials. If the soil environment where grapes are planted contains too much iron, it will directly influence the iron content of grapes and wines. The other is the irregular process. For unqualified distilleries, the grapes are often packed in many iron products in the processes of picking, transportation, brewing and storage. The component of iron products penetrates into the wine and increases its iron content. Consequently, the estate bottled wines are quite different from the wines produced in distilleries. The estate bottled wines are produced with ancient traditional technique, excellent quality but large quantity. Whereas, the wines produced in distilleries are mixed by various grapes. They will be pasted by private labels and then be sold to international countries. Therefore, plenty of unqualified products have taken place in the market.
